Speer's is an Australian, portrait photographer who explores concepts and new forms in her fine art photography. Her work influenced my personal study that i conducted.  focusing on the birthday party set. It explores the ideas of abstract photography, using children dressed in usual costumes. The photographer took inspiration from her daughter's fancy-dress party to create beautiful yet disturbing portraits of children, designed to evoke memories of our own childhood. I have learnt from her work how to explore photography in a new and interesting way, by using props to make it more fun for children.

Meatyard

Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925–1972) lived in Lexington, Kentucky, where he made his living as an optician while creating an impressive and enigmatic body of photographs. Meatyard’s creative circle included mystics and poets, such as Thomas Merton and Guy Davenport, as well as the photographers Cranston Ritchie and Van Deren Coke, who were mentors and fellow members of the Lexington Camera Club. Meatyard’s work spanned many genres and experimented with new means of expression, from dreamlike portraits—often set in abandoned places—to multiple exposures, motion-blur, and other methods of photographic abstraction.

From feedback when presenting my work on Masks, my teacher identified that my work has the same feel as Meatyard's. Although his work is quite unsettling, it is actually a very natural and simplistic idea that captures children in their natural setting. What makes his work unusual is the fact these children are then covered by masks which creates a more sinister feel.  Meatyard said that masks erased the differences between people. He photographed his family, photograph three, in 1962.

Sally is an American photographer, who is best known for capturing her young children but then later focused on landscapes showing decay and death. Her black and white photographs of her children often captured them naked, eating, sleeping and playing. However, they showed an adult like appearance that caused a lot of controversy in the media. Mann was an accomplished photographer before the series, but displaying these intimate black-and-white portraits caused a stir in the media.

Her photography has influenced my work on my personal statement, that allowed me to explore controversial work and meanings. Although my own work inst necessarily considered controversial, that theme in photography does interest me.

Jill Greenberg

She is an American photographer, renowned for capturing portraits and fine art. Her most popular set of photographs is the End Times.  It displays children’s emotions provoked by human interaction e.g. taking a sweet away from the child. Greenberg studied at Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Detroit Institute of Arts, so was influenced by art early on- ‘Greenberg has been taking photographs since she was 9 years old’. Greenberg took her inspiration from an essay written by Bill Moyers titled "There Is No Tomorrow," which discusses the negative influence of religious fundamentalists on American politics, in particular on environmental policy, foreign policy, gay marriage, stem cell research and abortion.

Although i do not agree with her political views, the notions of her work have interested me to focus predominately on children to explore emotion and behaviour in a commercial aspect.

TRIP TO TATE MODERN:

EXPLORING AN ARTIST GALLERY

The trip to Tate Modern focused predominately on still life artist, which wasn't as useful to me at the time we explored the exhibitions. However, the trip did enable me to explore different ways to present work. Since going to Tate, i have displayed my work in physical forms, such as websites and mounting my work. As well as this, during my A-level studies i have created books and mock-ups of a commercial magazine.
